Colin’s Wise Wednesday – 11th April 2018

All of us can enjoy God’s love and His presence. But why don’t we? Is it because we feel that we can do it “my way” and do it alone in our own strength and our own wisdom? What did Moses do when he was confronted with leading the Jews on the exodus from Egypt? He knew that he could not manage 2 million people, how was he going to provide for them? What did Moses do…he prayed for help. “If Your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here” Exodus 33:15 Putting it another way Moses preferred to go nowhere with God than anywhere without Him.

Why don’t we do the same? Let’s make being close to God our aim, our goal, our obsession. How  do we do this? Max Lucado has a solution. He says be more sponge and less rock. He then explains what he means. If you place a rock in the sea what happens? The outside gets wet and may change colour BUT the interior remains untouched. Now place a sponge in the sea, what happens? It absorbs the water. The water goes into every minute opening and alters the fundamental nature of the sponge.  God surrounds us the same way as the sea surrounds the rocks in the depths of the sea. He is everywhere, above below and on all side.  It is up to us to make the choice…. rock or sponge, in other words resist or receive. If we want to make being close to God our goal then we only have one choice and that is to become a sponge. We need to open not only our ears to His word/His promptings but we need to open our heart mind and soul so that His love can permeate our entire being.

How do we do that?  PRAY to God. Take Him up on all His promises. And know that He not only hears but is actively and closely involved in our specific situation. Sometimes we may lose support from family, friends and work colleagues but remember that “God will never leave you or forsake you”.

Try and memorize some of God’s other promises, it may take time if your memory is like mine but it will be worth persevering:

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go Gen 28:15

Do not be afraid for I am with you Gen26;24

Even if I go through the deepest darkness I will not be afraid Lord for are with me, Your rod and staff protect me. Ps 23;4

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Jos 1;9

Let’s pray:  Almighty God thanks for all Your awesome promises and please God help us to recall them in times of trouble and please God help us to be a sponge so that we can absorb all Your beauty that surrounds us every day that we so often  take so for granted. Thank You for family, friends, work colleagues, our Church and home group families and Your awesome, awesome creation. In Jesus name we pray with so much love and so much thanksgiving. Amen.
