What a friend we have in Jesus.  That sounds awesome but how do we go about it and foster a relationship with Jesus?  How do we form friendships here on earth? I found that we need to spend time together; we need to be constantly aware of the other’s needs; we need to be trusting, open and honest; we need to show appreciation, resolve any misunderstandings and choose compassion over cynicism.

I found that with my personal relationship with Jesus I also need all these qualities. I need to spend time in His presence by constantly worshipping Him and praying to Him. The Bible says” seek first the Kingdom of God and all things will be added”.

Where do we seek God? In Church? Yes. In the Bible, in Cell groups and in Creation? Yes. How about in the actions of other people? Lyn and I witnessed this last week through the love and caring of two people. A very close friend of Lyn’s Mom and Dad died a few weeks ago and at her funeral it became quite evident just how well Aida had been looked after in the 10 months before her death. The couple who took her under their wings had been very good friends to her for a many years.  When they heard her illness was terminal they put their lives on hold and brought Aida into their home to care for and nurse her till her death. This was unconditional love not expecting anything in return except to see Aida as comfortable as possible, under the circumstances, and to assure her that she was not alone.

What a friend Aida had in Brian and Lorna and what a friend we have in Jesus. Nothing sums this up better that the old faithful hymn….”What a Friend we have in Jesus”.   Jesus loves us no matter who or what we are, expecting nothing in return.

What a Friend we have in Jesus,
  All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
  Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
  O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
  Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
  Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
  Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
  Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness,
  Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,
  Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge—
  Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
  Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
  Thou wilt find a solace there.

Let’s pray: Take it to the Lord in prayer and in His arms He’ll take and shield thee. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Until we meet again, God Bless and please take care. ~Colin & Lyn
