23 October 2017: Another day in the Life of a Game Ranger. God’s creation in the wild.

Thursday was not the busiest day in the bush, and following the rains in the last few days, the elephants have all but vanished, as have the buffalo herds and leopards, making life a load more difficult for us than it was just a couple of weeks ago. But we headed out there to keep trying, and had a morning that saw us enjoying some rhinos, zebras, impalas, kudus and giraffes, but not much other excitement; the Western Pride were resting on the tarred road just north of our boundary, and there was no sign of any leopard for us this morning.

I had a new set of guests in the afternoon, so could take it easy and began with impala, kudu, waterbuck, giraffe, crocodiles and hippos around Argyle Dam, and as they enjoyed birds, we spent time watching them too. Moving west, we saw some good birds, drinking giraffes and eventually braved the lions on the access road – they were fast asleep, but when a couple of game drives from the reserve to the west arrived, I opted to leave and head towards a dam for a drink; luckily we saw some zebras and rhinos along the way before having a drink and heading back to the camp with some fireflies for company.
