Colin's Wise Wednesday - 18th September 2019

It was a wee bit late for getting out of bed, especially being in the bush, so this morning for our quiet time we decided to sit outside on the patio with our coffee, rusks (of course) and devotions and spend time in God’s presence.  Before reading I sat staring at the huge sycamore fig tree which stands in the river bed in front of the bungalow. The previous four days of our holiday while being on the patio busying ourselves with various things I hadn’t noticed any activity in the fig tree which is normally a haven for the green pigeon, one of my favorite birds, who just love the fruit that the tree produces most year round, but sadly not this time.

As I sat in silence wondering what to read nothing really jumped out at me so I sat in limbo as men can do, especially me, waiting for some inspiration.  A line of my favorite  hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ came to mind…“I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees”. In place of just this huge tree in front of me I had a closer look and saw a red headed weaver, with its red head in stark contrast to the green leaves. The paradise flycatcher was flittering here there and everywhere with its beauty being displayed like a model on a catwalk. The chinspot batis and the black headed oriole made an appearance. Meanwhile some distance away I could hear, but not see, the woodpecker knocking away.

This scenario made me think of God knocking on the door of my heart and being ignored. It also brought to mind another song by Little Richard 50 years ago that went something like this: “You keep on knocking but you can’t come in, come back tomorrow night and try it again”.

How often to I miss God’s knocking because I’m too busy or because I don’t look beyond what I’m used to seeing?

Let’s pray: Please God help me to pause long enough to hear You knocking and to open my heart, mind and soul to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Not only today but every day.  Let me not be too busy and ask You to come back tomorrow. Today is the day that the Lord has made lets rejoice and be glad in it.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Cheers and take care ~ Lyn & Colin
