Braai and patio makeovers

Home building braaiGet your braai and patio ready for summer and Heritage day in September – National Braai day!

Just imagine lounging in the sun with a cool drink grasped in your hands as the strong aroma of juicy meat bursting with flavour fills your nose and lungs while its grills on the braai. You can hear the meat sizzling and your mouth starts watering as you anticipate eating that gorgeous steak or boerewors.

Follow some of these tips in rejuvenating your entertainment area and create a relaxing outdoor experience:

Keep cool with the right roof

Thatch roof: Thatching is beautiful, cost-effective and eco-friendly, however, you need to hire a reputable contractor to install it! Also make sure that the thatch is coated with a fire resistant product – this is imperative! There are two types of thatch lapas, namely open and closed. An open thatch lapa uses pole or tree trunk supports and is "open" at all sides letting the sun in but still providing much needed shade.

Onduline Roofing: Onduline is a flexible, lightweight, corrugated roof sheeting solution made from organic fibres saturated in bitumen and pressurised under extreme heat. You can even combine thatch and onduline roofs!

Consider your braai options

Gas braai vs charcoal

It all depends on taste – literal and design aesthetic that will determine which one tickles your fancy more.

Gas braais are ready to go, rain or sunshine and you can start cooking straight away at just a push of a button.

Charcoal braai’s do take longer to set up and get going and you have to constantly stoke the fire.

Gas allows you to control the temperature with a dial, allowing you to cook different meats at different speeds.

Charcoal fires will burn hotter but you often have to wait for the temperature to be just right before adding your meat on top.

Gas may be convenient, but it’s more expensive. The gas braai as well as the actual gas is costly.

Charcoal and / or wood is much cheaper than buying gas and charcoal braais are also generally cheaper than gas grills.

It is easier to clean as grease wipes off effortlessly on the metal surface.

Charcoal braais are harder to clean because you have to remove the ash as well as clean the grill.

Braai products:

For a charcoal braai: consider the Weber Original One-Touch Silver Charcoal Grill. It is 57cm in diameter and comes with a 10 year warranty. The Weber Original One-Touch Silver Charcoal Grill is available from at a selling price of R2119.00.

Or purchase a built-in charcoal braai from JMW Fireplaces.

Outdoor furniture for your patio area

Depending on your design aesthetic and internal home décor, you should pick furniture that complement what you already have in your home. You get metal garden furniture, wooden furniture and plastic, so pick the type that will fit in beautifully with your style and taste.

For wooden furniture: Ensure that a primer and water, insect and fungi repellent is used. A good precaution would be to cover your wooden chairs and tables when they are not in use to really ensure longevity.

For metal furniture: Prevent rust by applying a metal paint. This can also be applied directly on already rusted areas. Such a product is the Oxirite metal paint.

Plastic furniture: These are easy to maintain, easy to clean and are very cost effective. However, they may not be as durable and long-lasting as wooden and metal furniture because they tend to be more vulnerable.

Furniture covers: Patio Solutions designs custom made covers that will perfectly fit your current furniture. They make protective covers which protect patio furniture (sofa's, arm chairs, dining tables and chairs, braai's and the like) from dust, rain, UV, pets, birds etc. They operate in Gauteng and Western Cape where they will come to you and measure up the furniture you need covered.
