home inspirationsYour bedroom is your sanctuary, the place where you should both relax and rejuvenate and quality sleep, is the answer. Your mattress and pillow has the greatest effect on the healing process during sleep, and a recent study shows that the paint colour on your walls, plays a role too. They can affect your sleep patterns and even the number of hours of sleep you get every night, this makes it important to choose bedroom colours that make your sleep experience better.

The study, carried out by Travelodge, looked into 2,000 homes across the UK, to investigate the influence of colour on quality of sleep. They discovered that there is a correlation and you can enhance your sleep by choosing specific bedroom décor colours.

“On average, adults regularly need about seven hours of proper restful sleep, in order to be productive,” says Jenni Jameson, Business Development Manager at TEMPUR. “The colours in your bedroom, as well as your mattress and pillow, play a large role in the quality and quantity of sleep. It is important that your bedroom environment creates a tranquil ambiance conducive to sleep.”

  • According to the survey, BLUE bedroom walls contributes to longer rest and is linked to calm and soothing feelings. Soft blue and green promote the feeling of calm and tranquility. It may even contribute to waking up feeling happy, positive and upbeat. Blue soothes your eyes and mind and can also stabilise your heartbeat making it ideal for both mental and physical wellness.
  • Shades of yellow were the second best colour for a longer sleep. Yellow is associated with peace and happiness and creates a joyful ambiance in your bedroom letting you enjoy a relaxing sleep.
  • Warm shades of orange were found to relax muscles and create a reassuring ambiance
  • Silver mimics moonlight and tends to cue the brain that it's night, plus can motivate you to exercise.
  • A pink colour scheme creates the feeling of optimism in your bedroom and adds to feelings of positivity and relaxation.
  • White and creams are soothing colours for your bedroom and the most popular wall colours as they can be matched with any colour accessories.

Worst Colours for Sleep

  • Red is not recommended for bedrooms as it tends to quicken the pulse which is the opposite affect needed before sleep.
  • Purple is not suitable as it can stimulate, activate your mind and imagination, energising your body and consequently reducing your sleep length. Purple bedrooms can also increase nightmares and vivid dreams making you feel exhausted and fatigued.
  • Brown isn’t appropriate for the bedroom as it creates a gloomy feeling. TIP: If you have a wood headboard, paint the walls with refreshing hues of blue or green to reduce the feeling of gloominess.
  • Grey didn’t perform well as it can create a dreary and isolated feeling, resulting in restless sleep.

With quality sleep a priority, it seems logical to paint your bedroom in a colour scheme that promotes relaxation, calms your mind and promotes a healthy life. Colour can also transform the look and feel of your bedroom.
